How to Organize a Diaper Bag (Without Overpacking)

Most diaper bags aren't too small...

They're just packed inefficiently.

After two kids, here's the system I actually use.

The 5 zones every diaper bag should have

  • Diapering
  • Feeding
  • Clothing
  • Mom Essentials
  • Grab & Go Pocket

Where everything should go in a bag like ours:

Grab-and-Go Pocket (Front Lower Zip Pocket)

This is the pocket you'll use most throughout the day, so reserve it for the essentials you reach for constantly:

🔑 Keys (attached to the built-in key clip)
📱 Phone (stored in a vertical pocket)
💄 Chapstick or lip gloss
🕶️ Sunglasses
🧴 Hand sanitizer

Changing Station (Inside Back Snap Pocket)

This is where I keep everything I need for a diaper change in one place. The matching changing mat stores perfectly in the large back snap pocket, so I keep all my changing essentials right beside it:

  • 👶 Diapers
  • 🧻 Wipes
  • 🧴 Spray diaper cream (my favorite because no messy fingers!)
  • 🗑️ Disposable diaper bags (optional)

When it's time for a diaper change, simply grab the changing mat and everything you need is already together. No digging through your bag while your little one is trying to crawl away. 🙃

🍼 Insulated Bottle Pockets

This one's pretty straightforward, but it's worth mentioning because not all bottle pockets are created equal. I keep bottles in the insulated pockets to help maintain temperature while we're out and about. Whether it's milk, formula, or a toddler's water bottle, these pockets keep them upright and easy to grab.

🧸 Toy Bag

Instead of tossing toys loose into the diaper bag, I keep a small zip pouch filled with a few favorites. It keeps everything together, makes cleanup easier, and when my little one asks for a toy, I know exactly where to find it.

Mom Tip: Skip silicone toys in your diaper bag when possible. I love them at home, but they collect lint, crumbs, and every mysterious fuzz floating around in the bottom of your bag. Plastic or wooden toys tend to travel much better.

🍎 Snack Bag

The same rule applies to snacks.

I keep all snacks in their own reusable pouch so crushed crackers don't end up sprinkled throughout the bag. When it's snack time, I grab one pouch instead of digging through every pocket looking for that one fruit bar I know I packed.

📄 Front Middle Zip Pocket

This is my "don't-make-me-search-for-it" pocket.

Anything I know I'll need quickly goes here:

  • Wallet
  • Insurance cards
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Extra pacifier
  • Travel tissues
  • Boarding passes when flying
  • Anything I don't want to be digging for while holding a toddler.

If I know I'll need it in a hurry, this is where it lives.

💧 Exterior Side Pockets

These pockets are reserved for drinks.

I usually carry:

  • My own water bottle
  • My child's water bottle
