Don’t Forget to Pack the Fun: Making Outings With Kids More Joyful

We’ve already talked about how important it is to pack grace when you're out and about with little ones—but there’s something else you should always bring, too:

Fun.

Yes, the snacks and wipes and spare outfits are important. Yes, the structure and consistency matter. But don’t overlook the power of joy, playfulness, and a little silliness to turn everyday moments into meaningful ones.

1. Fun Is a Tool—Not a Distraction

Sometimes we think of fun as a reward or an add-on. Something you do after the errands are done. But fun can actually be a parenting tool—one that helps regulate emotions, diffuse tension, and build strong connection with your child.

Studies have shown that play promotes social-emotional development, builds resilience, and strengthens the parent-child bond [source].

That’s right—fun isn’t fluff. It’s a foundation.

2. Bring the Fun With You (Literally)

You don’t need a whole toy chest in your diaper bag. Just one or two small, engaging items can go a long way. Think:

  • A favorite book or squishy toy

  • A tiny set of crayons and a notepad

  • A fidget or sensory item

  • A new sticker sheet for a little surprise

And don’t forget the power of you. Your voice, your imagination, your attention. You can turn checkout lines into “I Spy,” parking lot walks into animal parades, and shopping cart rides into roller coasters.

Fun doesn’t require more stuff. It just requires intention.

3. Fun Helps Kids Cooperate

Children are wired to seek connection, and fun is one of the fastest ways to create it. When you approach transitions and challenges with a playful tone—rather than a tense one—you often get more cooperation, fewer power struggles, and a smoother day overall [source].

Singing, giggling, turning routines into games—it helps kids feel seen and safe. It signals: “I’m with you. We’re in this together.”

4. Fun Turns Errands Into Memories

The truth is, you’re not just running to the store or grabbing a coffee. You’re building a childhood. And often, the little in-between moments—waiting in line, walking through Target, sitting in traffic—are the ones that stick.

When you bring joy into those mundane moments, you teach your children something powerful: that everyday life can be full of laughter and love. That being together matters, no matter what you’re doing.

That family is fun.

5. So Yes—Pack the Grace. But Pack the Fun, Too.

Bring the structure. Bring the calm. Bring the consistency.

But bring the lightheartedness, too.

Parenting in public doesn’t have to be stressful. With the right mix of preparation, perspective, and play, it can actually be…fun. For all of you.

And honestly? You deserve that joy just as much as they do.
